We have a position open for a postdoctoral fellow to join our team and work on the development and deployment of underwater mass spectrometers and other underwater analytical instruments. We are currently funded to develop and deploy these instruments in deep-sea habitats, with the intention of furthering our understanding of deep ocean biogeochemical processes. The project is a joint collaboration between scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen, Germany, and Harvard University, Cambridge, USA. Specifically, the fellow will work with an existing underwater mass spectrometer to improve performance and autonomy. These developments will take place as part of an ongoing research program for measuring the in situ concentrations of dissolved gases and volatiles in marine environments. The fellow will be responsible for participating in research expeditions, conducting in situ geochemical measurements, and publishing the results as lead author and in collaboration with colleagues.
Required skills for this position are competence with the use and maintenance of mass spectrometers, and experience with tuning the instrument for optimal analyses of target masses, as well as experience with analyzing mass spectrometric data. The fellow must be innovative and comfortable in modifying instrumentation to improve sensitivity and resolution. Extensive experience with managing and manipulating data using Excel, Matlab, LabView, or other programs is required. Desired skills are a good understanding of marine biogeochemistry, in particular dissolved gases and volatiles, and experience at sea. Given the nature of this project, the fellow must be able to work independently, highly organized, thorough and detail-oriented. The fellow will work at both laboratories involved in this research and must therefore be willing to travel between Germany and the USA. A PhD in a related field is required at the time of appointment.
Applicants should send application materials (resume, publication list, statement of research interests) and the names and contact information for three references to Dr. Nicole Dubilier and Dr. Peter Girguis. The duration of this position will be 24 months. It is available immediately and will remain open until filled.

The National Research Council of the National Academies sponsors a number of awards for postdoctoral and senior researchers at federal laboratories. These awards provide generous stipends ($42,000 - $72,000 per year for recent Ph.D. recipients and higher for additional experience), and the opportunity to do independent research in some of the best-equipped and staffed laboratories in the country.
Detailed program information, including instructions on how to apply online and a list of participating laboratories, is available on the NRC Research Associateship Programs Web site at www.national-academies.org/rap/
Questions should be directed to the NRC at 202-334-2760 (phone) or rap@nas.edu.
There will be four review cycles annually. Upcoming deadline dates are:
Applicants should begin a dialogue with prospective Advisers at the lab as early as possible, before their anticipated application deadline.
