Interns

Sarah Chang (microbiology junior)

“Ecology of RNA Viruses.” Sarah will be investigating the abundance, diversity, and dynamics of RNA Viruses in Kane‘ohe Bay.

Kristin M Halbert (biology junior)

“Gene flow in Diploria clivosa, D. strigosa, D. labyrinthiformis.” Three coral species, clivosa, strigosa, and labyrinthiformis, from the genus Diploria were sampled from three locations (Florida Keys, Panama and the Flower Garden Banks in the Gulf of Mexico). These samples will be genotyped using molecular methods to study their gene flow and speciation.

Brenner Wai (GES junior)

Brenner is currently working on two projects, “Nitrogen fixation in the North Pacific Ocean” and “Archaeal Expression of Ammonia-monooxygenase”.

Brandon Watson (marine biology junior)

”Effects of Pollution and Over-sedimentation on Pocillapora damicornis and Porites hawaiiensis.“ Brandon will be testing the survivability and growth rates of P. damicornis and P. hawaiiensis from larval stage up to an adult stage while exposed to several land-born pollutants.

Trainees

Chanteal Craft (marine biology sophomore)

“Abiotic Formation of Particles from the DOM pool in Kaneohe Bay Water.” Chanteal will test filtered water taken from Kaneohe Bay. Samples are incubated and at several pre-determined time points, taken to measure the progression of particle formations over time. The particle nature will help us to understand the cycle of the “Microbial Food Web,” a side web of the “Classic Food Web.”

Rebecca Fonoimoana (marine biology freshman)

“Hanauma Bay Population Study/Survey.” Rebecca will be monitoring human use of Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve to determine the impact of people on the park, and observing how time and weather affect the human use.

Kahoali‘i Keahi-Wood (undecided freshman)

TBA

Travis Niederhauser (undecided freshman)

“Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument Permit Management and Research database maintenance.” Travis is working on creating an online database where all of the articles written on the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands can be found. The reason for the database is to regulate access to the Monument, and to see if something has been studied already. For example, if someone trying to research the same thing someone else has already done, they will not be granted a permit.

Sara Thomas (meteorology senior)

“Hurricane Forecast Track Analysis for 2008.” Sara will use archived data to track hurricanes/tropical storms Gustav, Hanna, Ike, and Josephine as they occurred during late August and early September. She will use data collected from the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service websites to analyze forecast errors.
