C-MORE Science Kits

Marine Debris

(Grades 8-12)

Photo of marine debris Marine debris is an environmental problem of global importance, enlisting the concern and action of scientists, policy makers, and the general public. This kit of three lessons allows students to explore the causes, biological impacts, and geographical distribution of plastic marine debris. In Lesson 1, students are introduced to the biological impacts of marine debris through a PowerPoint presentation and hands-on activity stations. In Lesson 2, students examine the sources and dispersal of marine debris through an internet-based environmental forensics activity. The activities in Lesson 3 focus on the persistence of marine debris and allow students to develop solutions to the marine debris problem. These lessons are designed to be implemented in three 45-minute class periods, but many of the activities are discrete and can be easily rearranged to fit various schedules.
