Education Partners

C-MORE is committed to training the next generation of microbial oceanographers by working with K-12 students and their teachers. Our approach is to work in partnership and leverage resources with existing K-12 programs that share our goals. C-MORE is particularly focused on increasing diversity by reaching out to underrepresented groups, including ethnic minorities and persons with disabilities.

Ka ‘Imi ‘Ike

  • Ka ‘Imi ‘Ike is an NSF-funded program aimed at recruiting and retaining Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders to disciplines within the geosciences, such as oceanography. The cornerstone of Ka ‘Imi ‘Ike is a three-week residential summer program that exposes undergraduates to different geoscience careers through hands-on field experiences.

Pacific Internship Programs for Exploring Science (PIPES)

  • Pacific Internship Programs for Exploring Science (PIPES), a UH system-wide program based at UH Hilo, is committed to increasing the recruitment and retention of local students, esp. those of Native Hawaiian ancestry, into fields of study, and ultimate careers, related to the natural resources of Hawaii and the Pacific region. They offer paid ten-week summer internships for local students.

Future Flight

  • Future Flight uses space to catalyze student interest in science technology and the future… through summer space science camps, community science days (Astronaut Lacy Veach Day of Discovery, Astronomy Ellison Onizuka Science Day), robotics education programs, family science nights, professional development for teachers, support of NASA Explorer Schools in Hawaii. Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology

  • The Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology is a world-renowned research institute situated on Coconut Island in Kane‘ohe Bay. Coconut Island itself provides excellent opportunities for research and education, including community outreach. It is surrounded by 64 acres of coral reef, designated by the state of Hawai‘i as the Hawai‘i Marine Laboratory Refuge.

Na Pua No‘eau

  • Na Pua No‘eau, the Center for Gifted and Talented Native Hawaiian Children, was established at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo in 1989 for the purpose of increasing educational enrichment opportunities for Hawaiian children in grades K-12. Outreach centers were later established on the islands of Maui, Kaua‘i, O‘ahu and Moloka‘i, Lana‘i, and the West side of the Island of Hawai‘i to expand activities throughout the State of Hawai‘i.

Ka Hana ‘Imi Na‘auao

  • Ka Hana ‘Imi Na‘auao, based at the UHM College of Education’s Center on Disability Studies, is a partnership between scientists, teachers, curriculum experts and ALU LIKE (a Native Hawaiian-serving organization) aimed at developing culturally responsive, inclusive, career-oriented science curriculum (e.g., www.scihi.hawaii.edu). They also produce career-oriented videos to engage students in science.

Upward Bound

  • Upward Bound operates on university and community college campuses nationwide, including Hawaii High school students are selected each year to participate in year-round tutoring, college-preparatory activities, college visits, career exposure, and a six week summer college residential program complete with college credits and residence life.

Waikiki Aquarium

  • Waikiki Aquarium, founded in 1904, is the third oldest public aquarium in the United States. Located next to a living reef, the Aquarium has exhibits, programs, and research which focus on the aquatic life of Hawaii and the tropical Pacific. The 2,500 organisms in their exhibits represent more than 420 species of aquatic animals. The Waikiki Aquarium has been designated as the Coastal Ecosystem Learning Center for the Pacific Island Region of the Coastal America Partnership.
