C-MORE is proud to offer a 5-day workshop (September 21-25, 2008) on phytoplankton and bacterioplankton identification led by experienced senior and junior marine microbial ecologists at the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB), Coconut Island, Hawai‘i. Applications from students from under-represented groups are strongly encouraged. Application deadline is July 1, 2008.

The C-MORE Scholars Program is excited to offer underrepresented University of Hawai‘i students, especially Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, various opportunities to enhance their undergraduate education experience through participation in hands-on research. C-MORE Scholars receive guidance and help from a mentor who is a scientist at the university and/or industry. Three levels of awards are offered, depending on the skill and knowledge level of the applicant. Application deadline is Friday, May 9, 2008. Opportunities for K-12 Teachers

C-MORE has just launched a program of mini-grants (up to $1000) for K-12 education projects related to microbial oceanography. Click here for more information and an application form.

Science Teachers Aboard Research Ships (STARS)
Starting in March 2007, K-12 teachers are invited to participate in monthly research cruises. Participating educators will work closely with scientists on authentic research projects. Click here for more information and an application form.

C-MORE is committed to training the next generation of microbial oceanographers by working with K-12 students and their teachers. Our approach is to work in partnership and leverage resources with existing K-12 programs that share our goals. C-MORE is particularly focused on increasing diversity by reaching out to underrepresented groups, including ethnic minorities and persons with disabilities. The 2008 Hawai‘i Summer Course in Microbial Oceanography will be held June 2 to July 11, 2008 (download the flyer PDF). This course is offered to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars with interests in marine microbiology and biological oceanography.
